I was busking outside of a bar in Eagle Rock one evening, and when I gathered my earnings, I found a fragment of a dollar bill, ripped almost exactly in half. I might have reacted with anger, indignant at what must have been a pointed slight, but instead I glimpsed the humor in the situation and decided to mine the image by writing a song about it. And so the title came first for this one -- "Broken Dollar." And I went from there.
lyrics
my mind on this, knock into a shade of that
i see through you
is that a fact?
i don't forget, but still i leave behind
i roll through you
dragged along inside my mind
broken dollar
halfway broken mirror
put 'em on my altar and play the good forgiver
found a new word
a new word has found me
and i'll throw away the past if it will be done with me
i didn't know too many things to hold the light
to say a name
to give up something with a fight
if i told you now that i choose to be happy
would you believe me?
i wonder
my castle cares
my winding backwards haul
my see-through shoes
it's all slowing to a crawl
i get the seal and i slap it on the goods
i do my job
am i too blind to see the truth?
i didn't know too many things to hold the light
to say a name
to give up something with a fight
if i told you know that i choose to be happy
would you believe me?
i didn't know too many things to hold the light
to say a name
to give up something with a fight
now i'm alone and i'm bright
i can't be found
but now i know to wail
i make a frightful sound
